FASHION DESIGNER Tigist has been working on the fashion industry. She is the owner and founder of TG’SH design. She modernizes the cotton hand woven fabric by designing clothes for men and women. She has transformed the Gabi to colorful scarves and gives it a style so that it has a multifunctional purpose. She actively works to promote her design throughout Africa by participating in events such as Hub of Africa fashion week and by attending meetings such as Fashion Africa Conference.

WRITER Tsehay has B.A. in foreign language and Literature from Unity University and Diploma in Business Education from Addis Ababa University. She has been called the first contemporary Ethiopian woman novelist, part of a wave of women writers who entered the literary scene in the early 1990s. She has been a teacher for 32 years and her novel writing journey lasts for more than 20 years in which she has become full time writer after retirement from her teaching job. Tsehay has published eight books: plotted on history, culture, social life and women’s obstacles in the course of different generations. She has also published two books of poetry. She has two completed books currently which she was not able to publish due to the high cost of printing. Tsehay has received several awards for her contribution in Amharic literature.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT/DEVELOPMENT    Zerthun has BA and Masters’ degree in development management and organizational leadership.  She has started her journey 25 years ago, based on her concern for gender equality in her society. Hence, she has founded Siiqqee Women’s Development Association to empower destitute women in her community. The project presently is benefiting more than 60, 000 women in eight zones of Oromia region.  The organization is governed by board of directors. The name Siiqqee is believed to symbolize the traditional empowerment initiatives used to be the advocates of women rights.

ANTHROPOLOGIST/LECTURER  Blen has attended MedaWelabu University and earned a BA degree in history and heritage management. She was a graduate assistant at Mekelle University. She has done her MA in social anthropology. She has returned to Mekelle University to carry out research on various gender-related topics and to teach undergraduate and MA courses in the anthropology department. She provides senior essay advice, co-advise MA research papers, and guide female students by discussing gender-based violence, life skills, and the sexual violence policy of Mekelle University. She has also served as the institute of paleo-environment and heritage conservation’s gender focal person which has made it possible for her to comprehend the difficulties faced by female university students in their academic and educational involvement, which is often linked with their gender identity and cultural background. She is currently a third-year PhD student in the Department of anthropology at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Her Ph.D. is associated with a project called Decent Work and GVC-based Industrialization in Ethiopia, in which she is undertaking labor ethnographic research at industrial parks on the role of gender and its implications for global value governance.

SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY/GENDER/RESEARCHER  Kiya is an experienced researcher and an assistant professor based at the Department of Social Anthropology, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. She has been involved in ethnographic research for over ten years on a range of migration and refugee related areas including experiences of Ethiopian migrants to and from the Middle East, Sudan, Libya and Europe. She has also researched refugee protection, migration and refugee policy, migration management and livelihoods at the Ethiopia-Sudan border, interlinkages between migration and poverty in Ethiopia, as well as understanding migration and the labor market among others. She has also intensively researched religion, religious identity and religious relations. She has also worked on adolescents and child wellbeing for over six years, focusing on education, bodily integrity, health and nutrition, psychosocial wellbeing, economic empowerment, and voice and agency. Her research has also looked into slavery and marginalized communities, women empowerment, financial inclusion, health and nutrition of mothers and children, gender and policy, gender and media, youth aspiration and resilience, among others.
